▸ ABOUT THIS COURSE

CSEET

CSEET is the entry-level examination for the CS professional programme offered by ICSI. Clearing it qualifies you to register for CS Executive. It does not award a standalone certificate, designation, or membership. From June 2026, CSEET has been significantly restructured — it is now an offline, centre-based exam conducted over four days with a mix of subjective and OMR-based papers, replacing the earlier single-day remote-proctored online format.

An application must be made within six months of admission to the programme. A refund committee evaluates the application based on financial need and merit. Not all applications are approved; this is a discretionary scheme.
▸ CERTIFICATION & RENEWAL

What you get & how to stay current.

CERTIFICATE / CREDENTIAL AWARDED
CSEET (Eligibility to register for CS Executive)
issued by ICSI
  • CSEET does not award a standalone certificate, credential, or professional designation. Clearing CSEET grants eligibility only to register for the CS Executive; it does not confer any title, qualification suffix (such as "CS" or "ACS"), or professional membership.
  • Clearing both groups of CS Executives.
  • Clearing both groups of CS professionals.
  • Completing the mandatory 21 months of practical training.
  • Being admitted as an Associate Member (ACS) or Fellow Member (FCS) of ICSI.
  • Candidates should not list "CSEET passed" on their resumes as a qualification; it is simply a prerequisite for progressing to the next level.
RENEWAL & RECERTIFICATION
Certificate validity: Registration is valid for 5 years from the date of first registration.
To renew before expiry, do one of the following:
A

Renewal, Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements, and annual membership fees do not apply at the CSEET level. These obligations apply only to full ICSI members — those who have completed all three levels and obtained membership.

Designation / Title Permitted
1No designation or professional title is awarded or permitted at the CSEET stage. Candidates are not entitled to use any suffix (such as "CS," "ACS," "FCS") or professional prefix after clearing CSEET. These designations are awarded only upon completion of all three levels and admission to ICSI membership.
2It is professional misconduct under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980 to falsely claim or use the CS designation before completing all membership formalities. Candidates must therefore refrain from using any CS-related designation or title until they are formally admitted as an ICSI member.
Completion & Certification
1
Duration to Complete

CSEET is a single examination with no mandatory minimum time to completion. A candidate who clears all four papers in their first attempt (on their first session of registration) technically completes the CSEET requirement. However, candidates who do not clear on their first attempt may require multiple sessions.

2
Registration Validity

Registration is valid for 5 years from the date of first registration. This means a candidate has five years from their registration date to clear CSEET. If CSEET is not cleared within this window, the registration expires, and the candidate must apply for Registration De Novo — a fresh registration with a new fee (prescribed by ICSI) — to continue. Failing to apply for Registration De Novo results in the cancellation of registration benefits; the candidate would then need to start the entire process anew, re-submitting all documents and paying registration fees again.

3
Typical Timeline

In practice, many candidates clear CSEET within one to two attempts, particularly those with a strong educational foundation in commerce or business studies. The three-times-yearly examination schedule (February, June, October) allows candidates to plan multiple attempts within a calendar year if needed.

▸ INDIA vs. GLOBAL DEMAND
ICSI is the largest body of Company Secretaries globally, with over 75,000 active members and approximately 2,00,000 students across all three programme levels. Demand for Company Secretaries in India is structurally robust and tied to regulatory compliance requirements.
Statutory Requirement: Under the Companies Act, 2013, a whole-time Company Secretary is a mandatory Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) for: Every listed company (on any recognised stock exchange); Every unlisted public company with a paid-up share capital of ₹10 crore or more. This statutory requirement means the demand for Company Secretaries is independent of economic cycles and business sentiment — it is driven by legal and compliance requirements.
Projected Shortfall: ICSI projects that approximately 1,00,000 Company Secretaries will be needed by 2030. Currently, ICSI admits approximately 2,500 new members per year. This represents a significant supply-demand gap, indicating strong and sustained job prospects for qualified CS professionals.
▸ AFFILIATED / ACCEPTING ORGANISATIONS
Chartered Governance Institute (CGI), UK & Ireland: ICSI members are exempt from 14 of the 17 CGI examinations; they need to clear only 3 core papers to obtain CGI membership.
Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI): Completion of CS Executive qualifies candidates for the International Investment Administration Qualification (IAQ); full ICSI membership qualifies for automatic ACSI (Associate, Chartered Institute) membership.
Professional Bodies in Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia: Under ICSI's bilateral tie-up agreements, qualified CS professionals from India can obtain equivalent memberships in these countries with reduced requirements.
These international pathways significantly increase the career mobility and global recognition of the CS qualification.
▸ HOW IT STACKS UP

CSEET vs. close alternatives.

Key Differences: CS is the only qualification exclusively focused on corporate governance and compliance. CA requires audit and accounting specialisation; CS does not. LLB leads to law practice and litigation; CS leads to corporate compliance and governance. CS is more affordable than CA and LLB post-graduation.

Difficulty Level & Pass Rate
Difficulty Level
CSEET has the highest pass rate among all three levels of the CS programme. This high pass rate reflects the foundational nature of CSEET — it is designed as an entry examination, not a gatekeeping hurdle.
Official Pass Rate
Under the previous single-day online format (operational until January 2026), the pass rate was 72.84% according to official ICSI examination data.
Pass Rate Outlook
Pass rate data under the new pattern will be available only from the June 2026 exam results onwards. It is likely that the pass rate will decline compared to the 72.84% figure, though it will still remain higher than CS Executive (~19%) and CS Professional (~26%), reflecting CSEET's continued role as an entry-level examination.
Commonly Reported Difficult Units
However, the restructured June 2026 format is expected to be significantly more demanding than the previous online version. The shift from a single-day online examination (primarily MCQ-based) to a 4-day offline examination with predominantly subjective/descriptive papers will require a deeper understanding, application of concepts, and extended written responses. This increased difficulty is intentional: it aligns CSEET more closely with the professional standards of CS Executive and CS Professional, ensuring that candidates entering the programme have a stronger foundational base.

Can be pursued alongside other studies or work.

Yes. CSEET is fully compatible with pursuing studies while working. There are no mandatory attendance requirements. The exam is conducted three times a year (February, June, and October under the revised pattern), giving candidates flexibility to schedule attempts around college semesters or work commitments. ICSI officially permits the mandatory 21 months of practical training to be completed at any point - including after clearing all professional exams - removing the biggest scheduling constraint from the overall programme.

Key update categories to track via ICSI Announcements:

Historical Timeline: The January 2026 exam session marked the final administration of CSEET under the old remote-proctored online format. Any student who appeared in January 2026 or earlier took the MCQ-based, single-day, online examination.

June 2026 Restructuring: Effective June 2026, CSEET transitioned to a new offline, centre-based examination format conducted over four consecutive days. This represents the most significant structural change to CSEET since its introduction, aligning the foundation level with the professional standards expected at higher levels.

Examination Schedule Changes: CSEET changed from a four-times-yearly schedule to a three-times-yearly schedule beginning June 2026. The new schedule is: February, June, and October each year. Each session offers equivalent opportunities; there is no "preferred" season to attempt.

Fee Structure Revision (effective February 2026): Registration fee: ₹7,500 (one-time); Enrollment/exam fee: ₹1,500 per session. These fees apply to all candidates registering from February 2026 onwards.
