▸ ABOUT THIS COURSE

CA Intermediate

CA Intermediate is the second of three levels of the Chartered Accountancy programme conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It bridges the foundational knowledge acquired at the CA Foundation level and the advanced, professional-level expertise tested at the CA Final level. It is also referred to as CA Inter or CA IPCC (in the older scheme, now discontinued). Under the new ICAI scheme (effective from 2024 onwards), the CA Intermediate course has been significantly restructured — reduced from 8 papers to 6 papers, divided into two groups of three papers each. The new scheme introduces a standardised 70% descriptive and 30% objective (MCQ) question pattern across all six papers, with no negative marking. The total marks across both groups amount to 600 marks. A critical feature of the new scheme is that students are required to clear both groups of CA Intermediate before they can commence their Practical Training (Articleship). This is a reversal from the old scheme, where articleship could begin after clearing Group 1. Clearing both groups of CA Intermediate is also a prerequisite for registering in the CA Final course. In addition to the examination, under the new scheme, students who have cleared both groups of CA Intermediate must pass Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOMs — Set A and Set B) before they can appear in the CA Final examination. These SPOMs are online, self-paced, and free of additional charge.

LevelIntermediate — the second level of the CA qualification; tests application, analysis, and professional judgement in core areas of accounting, law, taxation, audit, cost management, and financial management
▸ WHO THIS IS FOR
  • Students who have cleared the CA Foundation examination and wish to progress to the next level of the CA qualification
  • Graduates and post-graduates who have entered directly into CA Intermediate via the Direct Entry route (bypassing CA Foundation), based on qualifying percentage marks
  • Students aspiring to become professionally qualified Chartered Accountants — this is a mandatory level with no bypass route
  • Candidates seeking in-depth expertise in advanced accounting, corporate law, taxation (direct and indirect), cost and management accounting, auditing and ethics, and financial management and strategic management.
▸ ELIGIBILITY & PREREQUISITES

One of the most accessible certifications in India.

There are two routes to register for CA Intermediate — the Foundation Route and the Direct Entry Route.

Foundation
Route 1 — Foundation Route
The candidate must have passed the CA Foundation examination conducted by ICAI
Direct Entry
Route 2 — Direct Entry Route
Commerce Graduates / Post-Graduates: Candidates who have passed graduation or post-graduation in Commerce from a recognised university or institution with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (or an equivalent grade) in the qualifying examination are eligible
None
Age Limit
No minimum or maximum age limit is prescribed by ICAI for CA Intermediate
8 months
Study Period
The candidate must complete a mandatory study period of eight months from the date of registration before being eligible to appear in the CA Intermediate examination

Nationality: The CA Intermediate examination is primarily for Indian nationals. Foreign nationals may register and appear, subject to ICAI's specific guidelines for international candidates.

▸ PREREQUISITES
  • 1Passed CA Foundation (Foundation Route) OR met the Direct Entry graduate/ICSI/ICAI-CMA eligibility criteria
  • 2Completed the mandatory 8-month study period from the date of registration before the first attempt
  • 3Completed ICITSS (Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) — a 4-week mandatory training — before commencement of Practical Training (Articleship). ICITSS is not required before appearing in the CA Intermediate exam, but must be completed before beginning articleship
  • 4Registration with ICAI's Board of Studies completed before the cut-off date for the relevant examination session
  • 5The candidate must have also passed Class 12 (Senior Secondary) from a recognised board — this is a prerequisite even for Foundation route students
  • 6ICSI / ICAI-CMA Intermediate Pass: Candidates who have passed the Intermediate level examination of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) or the Intermediate level examination of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI-CMA) are eligible to directly register for CA Intermediate, regardless of graduation percentage
▸ EXEMPTIONS & RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER EXAMS

A candidate who scores 60 marks or more (60%) in any individual paper in an attempt is eligible for an exemption in that paper. CA Intermediate has a well-defined paper-wise exemption system — one of the most important features for students who do not clear both groups in one attempt. An exemption means the candidate does not need to appear in that paper in subsequent attempts within the exemption validity period — the marks obtained are carried forward. The candidate still needs to meet the 50% aggregate per group using the exempted marks and marks scored in the remaining papers of that group. Exemptions are valid for the current and next two immediately following examination sessions after the attempt in which the exemption was earned (i.e., valid for 3 sessions including the session in which exemption was earned — check current ICAI circular for exact validity). If a student is unable to pass the said group within the following three attempts and has exhausted the exemption granted, they may opt for permanent exemption, but must score a minimum of 50% in each of the remaining papers of that group to pass. If a group is not cleared even after using the exemption for the full validity period, the exemption stands cancelled and the candidate must re-appear in all papers of that group. Under the new scheme, there is no negative marking even for MCQs — so exemption strategy is particularly valuable. ICAI permits candidates to surrender their paper-wise exemption if they choose to re-appear in all papers of a group. This can be beneficial if a candidate feels they can score higher and wishes to improve their overall performance.

  • ICSI Intermediate pass (CS Intermediate): Eligible to directly register for CA Intermediate via Direct Entry without clearing CA Foundation

  • ICAI-CMA Intermediate pass: Eligible to directly register for CA Intermediate via Direct Entry without clearing CA Foundation

  • Commerce Graduate with 55%+ aggregate: Eligible for Direct Entry into CA Intermediate; Foundation exempted

  • Non-Commerce Graduate with 60%+ aggregate: Eligible for Direct Entry into CA Intermediate; Foundation exempted

The candidate must complete the registration with ICAI's Board of Studies on or before the prescribed cut-off date for the respective examination session

EXAM WINDOW

Important: ICAI officially announces exact exam dates approximately 3–4 months before each session. Students must always verify current dates and registration deadlines from the official ICAI website at icai.org. The 8-month registration cut-off is the key constraint unique to CA Intermediate (Foundation has 4 months). Under the new ICAI scheme, CA Intermediate is conducted three times a year — in January, May/June, and September. This triannual schedule applies to both Group I and Group II.

▸ PASSING CRITERIA & CUT-OFFS
  • Minimum marks required per paper: 40 out of 100 (40%) in each individual paper within the group
  • Minimum aggregate marks required per group: 50% aggregate of total marks in that group — i.e., 150 out of 300 for each group
  • Both conditions — 40% in each paper AND 50% aggregate per group — must be satisfied simultaneously to pass a group
  • If you appear for both groups together but fail to secure the 50% aggregate in one group, you can still pass both groups simultaneously if the total marks of both groups combined result in a 50% aggregate overall, provided you scored at least 40% in every single paper across all subjects.
  • A candidate can clear one group at a time or both groups together in a single attempt
  • Paper-wise exemption: Scoring 60% or more (60 marks) in any paper earns a paper-wise exemption, allowing the candidate to carry forward those marks in subsequent attempts within the exemption validity window
  • No negative marking — not even for MCQ sections. This is explicitly confirmed by ICAI under the new scheme.
  • Distinction: A candidate who scores 70% or more aggregate across all 6 papers of both groups in a single attempt is declared to have passed with Distinction. This requires clearing both groups together.
  • Confirmed under the new ICAI scheme — even MCQ sections carry no negative marking. This slightly reduces the risk for students compared to CA Foundation Papers 3 and 4 which have negative marking.
▸ NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS & RETAKE POLICY
  • CA Intermediate registration is valid for 5 years from the date of registration. Revalidation of CA Intermediate registration is permitted once, on payment of prescribed fees, before the 5-year validity expires.
  • There is no limit on the number of attempts within the registration validity period — candidates can attempt every session (up to 3 per year x 5 years = 15 attempts maximum within original validity, plus further after revalidation).
  • There is no mandatory cooling period between attempts — a candidate who fails or does not clear both groups in one session may attempt the next session immediately.
  • Group-wise flexibility: Candidates can choose to appear for only Group I, only Group II, or both groups together in any given session.
  • Paper-wise exemptions carry forward across sessions as per the exemption validity rules — see Section 2.3 above.

▸ CERTIFICATION & RENEWAL

What you get & how to stay current.

▸ CERTIFICATE / CREDENTIAL AWARDED
CA Intermediate Pass Certificate
— issued by ICAI
  • On clearing both groups: A CA Intermediate Pass Certificate is issued by ICAI
  • The certificate can be collected from the respective regional office or dispatched to the candidate. Verification of pass status is available on the ICAI website through the candidate's registration number and roll number.
  • The CA Intermediate pass certificate qualifies the candidate to: (a) Register for the CA Final course, (b) Commence Practical Training (Articleship) under a practicing CA, and (c) Begin the Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM — Set A and Set B) at the Intermediate level, and Set C and Set D at the Final level
  • Clearing one group only does not issue a certificate — it only earns the group exemption (not a standalone certification)
  • Distinction: Candidates who score 70% or more aggregate across all 6 papers in a single attempt (both groups together) receive a Certificate of Merit from ICAI
▸ RENEWAL & RECERTIFICATION
Certificate validity: The CA Intermediate pass certificate does not expire and does not require renewal — it is a permanent pass record.
To renew before expiry, do one of the following:
A

However, the CA Intermediate registration (not the certificate) expires after 5 years and must be revalidated before expiry if the student has not cleared both groups.

B

At the post-qualification (CA member) level, ICAI members must fulfil Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements — this applies after becoming a full CA member, not at the Intermediate stage.

▸ Designation / Title Permitted
1Clearing CA Intermediate does not confer any professional designation or post-nominal title. The designation 'CA' (Chartered Accountant) is awarded only upon completing the full three-level programme — Foundation, Intermediate, and Final — along with the 2-year Practical Training (Articleship) and passing the Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM Sets A, B, C, D).
2However, a student who has registered for CA Intermediate and is undergoing Articleship is recognised as an 'Article Assistant' or 'Articled Trainee' — a formal role under a practising CA with a prescribed stipend. The ICAI revised stipend structure under the new scheme (effective 2023 regulations) prescribes higher minimum stipends for articled assistants.
▸ Completion & Certification
1
Minimum Duration (to clear CA Intermediate)

8 months (mandatory study period) + at least one exam session. The earliest a student can appear is 8 months after registration; the earliest they can clear is the session immediately after that 8-month period.

2
Maximum Duration (Registration Validity)

5 years from the date of registration (with one permitted revalidation for a further period on payment of prescribed fees)

3
Typical Duration

Most students take 1–3 years from registration to clear both groups of CA Intermediate, taking into account multiple attempts and revision cycles. Clearing both groups in a single session (both groups together at first attempt) is rare and represents a very high achievement.

▸ INDIA vs. GLOBAL DEMAND
India has over 4 lakh ICAI members and is among the world's largest accounting bodies. The CA qualification is the most prestigious and widely demanded accounting credential in India.
CA Intermediate clearance itself does not have global recognition — it is a milestone within the India-specific CA pathway. The designation 'CA' and associated global recognition kick in only at the Final qualification level.
Upon full qualification as CA, ICAI's Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with CPA Australia, CPA Canada, ICAEW (UK), CPA Ireland, and ICAZ (Zimbabwe) allow conversion to those qualifications, enabling global mobility.
▸ AFFILIATED / ACCEPTING ORGANISATIONS
CA Intermediate clearance + Articleship completion + SPOM completion qualifies the student for CA Final registration — which is the next mandatory step within ICAI's own framework
Some Indian universities allow CA Inter-cleared students to claim credit exemptions or lateral entry into postgraduate commerce programmes — check with individual institutions
ICSI and ICAI-CMA: Mutual credit recognition at registration level (ICSI/CMA Intermediate pass can enter CA Intermediate directly), but not at certification level
▸ HOW IT STACKS UP

CA Intermediate vs. close alternatives.

A factual side-by-side against the certifications people most often compare it to.

Difficulty Level & Pass Rate
Difficulty Level
Hard to Very Hard — the CA Intermediate is widely recognised as one of the toughest intermediate-level professional examinations in India. The combination of 6 demanding subjects across accounting, law, taxation, cost management, audit, and financial management, with a 70% subjective component requiring both theoretical depth and numerical accuracy, makes this a rigorous examination.
Official Pass Rate
9.39% — officially declared by ICAI (8th March 2026). 18.42% — the highest in the last 5 years (both old and new course).
Pass Rate Outlook
Both groups together: 9–20% per session. Individual groups: 13–27%.
Commonly Reported Difficult Units
Paper 1 (Advanced Accounting) — complex accounting standards and special entity accounts; Paper 2 (Corporate Law) — extensive Companies Act coverage; Paper 3 (Taxation) — dual coverage of Income Tax and GST with frequent law amendments; Paper 5 (Auditing) — requires both technical knowledge and professional judgement scenarios

Can be pursued alongside other studies or work.

Yes — CA Intermediate can be prepared alongside a full-time undergraduate degree (B.Com, BBA etc.) since ICAI study is self-paced with no mandatory classroom attendance.

Many students simultaneously pursue their graduation and CA Intermediate, as both have broadly compatible subjects (Accounting, Economics, Law, Taxation).

However, under the new ICAI scheme, articleship (2 years of practical training) begins only after clearing both groups of CA Intermediate. During articleship, ICAI restricts the number of leaves — 12 per year — and significant classroom coaching may not be feasible alongside full-time articleship.

Working professionals using the Direct Entry route can prepare for CA Intermediate alongside their jobs, though the 8-month mandatory study period and the depth of 6 subjects makes this challenging for those in demanding work roles.
