▸ ABOUT THIS COURSE

CA Foundation

CA Foundation is the entry-level examination of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) programme conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It is the first of three levels — Foundation, Intermediate, and Final — that a candidate must clear to become a qualified Chartered Accountant in India. The CA designation is one of the most prestigious professional qualifications in Indian finance and accounting. The Foundation course is designed to test a candidate's foundational understanding of accounting principles, business laws, quantitative aptitude, and business economics. Under the new ICAI scheme (introduced progressively from 2024 onwards), the Foundation course consists of four papers totalling 400 marks, with a combination of subjective and objective question types. Students may provisionally register for the CA Foundation course after passing their Class 10 (Secondary) examination, but can appear in the actual Foundation examination only after passing their Class 12 (Senior Secondary) examination and completing a mandatory four-month study period.

Global Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs)ICAI has MRAs with CPA Canada, CPA Australia, ICAEW (UK), ICAZ (Zimbabwe), and others — applicable at the Final level upon qualification
LevelEntry-Level / Foundation — the starting point of the Chartered Accountancy journey; designed for candidates who have just completed or are appearing in their Class 12 examination
▸ WHO THIS IS FOR

  • Commerce students seeking a professional qualification alongside or after their undergraduate studies
  • Aspiring Chartered Accountants who wish to follow the standard Foundation route (as opposed to the Direct Entry route available to graduates/post-graduates)
  • Students interested in careers in audit, taxation (direct and indirect), financial reporting, corporate finance, and advisory services
  • Anyone seeking a globally respected, practice-oriented professional qualification in accounting and finance issued by a statutory body.
▸ ELIGIBILITY & PREREQUISITES

One of the most accessible certifications in India.

ICAI prescribes two stages of CA Foundation eligibility — one for registration and one for appearing in the examination.

Class 10
Eligibility to Register for CA Foundation
A candidate who has passed the Class 10 (Secondary School) examination conducted by a Board constituted by law in India or an examination recognised by the Central Government as equivalent thereto may provisionally register for the CA Foundation course
Class 12
Eligibility to Appear in CA Foundation Examination
The candidate must have passed the Class 12 (Senior Secondary) examination conducted by a Board constituted by law in India, or an examination recognised by the Central Government or State Government as equivalent thereto
None
Age Limit
No minimum or maximum age limit is prescribed by ICAI for the CA Foundation course or examination
4 months
Study Period
The candidate must have completed a minimum study period of four months from the date of registration before being eligible to appear in the Foundation examination

Nationality: The CA Foundation examination is primarily conducted for Indian nationals. Foreign nationals may register and appear subject to ICAI's specific guidelines for international candidates.

▸ PREREQUISITES
  • 1Passed Class 10 from a recognised board — required for provisional registration
  • 2Passed Class 12 from a recognised board — required to appear in the examination
  • 3Mandatory four-month study period from the date of registration must be completed before the first attempt
  • 4Registration with ICAI's Board of Studies must be completed before the stipulated cut-off dates for each exam session
  • 5No minimum percentage of marks is required in Class 10 to register for the Foundation course
  • 6Foreign nationals may also register, subject to providing proof of an equivalent qualification
▸ EXEMPTIONS & RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER EXAMS

If a candidate passes in some papers but fails in others, they are NOT granted exemption in the passed papers under the Foundation scheme — they must re-appear in all four papers in the next attempt. The CA Foundation does not have a paper-wise exemption carry-forward system like CA Intermediate. A candidate who secures 70% or more marks in aggregate (i.e., 280 marks out of 400) is declared to have passed with Distinction — this is a performance honour, not an exemption mechanism.

  • Graduates and Post-Graduates (Commerce): Candidates who have passed the graduation or post-graduation examination in Commerce from a recognised university with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in specific subjects as per ICAI guidelines

  • Graduates and Post-Graduates (Other Streams): Candidates from streams other than Commerce who have passed graduation or post-graduation with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks

  • Intermediate-level pass of ICSI or ICAI-CMA: Candidates who have passed the Intermediate level of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) or the Intermediate level of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI-CMA) are eligible to directly register for CA Intermediate

  • Note: Candidates using the Direct Entry route must undergo a Practical Training (Articleship) component before appearing in the CA Intermediate examination. The CA Foundation exemption (via Direct Entry) is specific to CA Intermediate registration and does not carry forward any marks or credits.

The candidate must have registered for the CA Foundation course with ICAI's Board of Studies (BoS) on or before the cut-off date for the respective examination attempt

EXAM WINDOW

Important: ICAI officially announces exact exam dates and registration cut-offs approximately 3-4 months before each session. Students must always verify current dates on icai.org. The dates above are indicative based on the established ICAI pattern.

▸ PASSING CRITERIA & CUT-OFFS
  • Minimum marks required per paper: 40 out of 100 (40%) in each individual paper
  • Minimum aggregate marks required: 200 out of 400 (50% aggregate across all four papers)
  • A candidate who fails to score 40% in any one paper fails the attempt, regardless of aggregate marks
  • A candidate who scores below 50% aggregate but above 40% in each paper also fails
  • Both conditions — 40% in each paper AND 50% aggregate — must be simultaneously satisfied to pass
  • Distinction: A candidate who scores 280 or more out of 400 (70% or above aggregate) is declared to have passed with Distinction
  • No carry-forward of marks across sessions — the entire Foundation examination (all 4 papers) must be re-attempted in case of failure
▸ NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS & RETAKE POLICY
  • Under the new ICAI scheme, the validity of CA Foundation registration is 4 years from the date of first eligibility to appear in the Foundation examination. Revalidation is not permitted at the Foundation level — once 4 years have elapsed, the registration lapses.
  • Within the 4-year validity period, candidates can make up to 12 attempts (3 sessions per year x 4 years) — there is no restriction on the number of attempts during this period, subject to meeting the cut-off registration dates for each session.
  • There is no mandatory cooling period between attempts — a candidate who fails in one session can register for the very next session.
  • If a candidate's Foundation registration lapses (after 4 years) without clearing the exam, they must re-register with a fresh payment, but will also need to meet the eligibility criteria applicable at that time.

▸ CERTIFICATION & RENEWAL

What you get & how to stay current.

▸ CERTIFICATE / CREDENTIAL AWARDED
CA Foundation Pass Certificate
— issued by ICAI
  • On passing all four papers: A CA Foundation Pass Certificate is issued by ICAI
  • The certificate is physically issued by ICAI. Verification of pass status is available on the ICAI website through the candidate's registration number.
  • The Foundation pass certificate qualifies the student for registration in the CA Intermediate course — the second level of the CA programme. It does not in itself confer a professional designation.
  • Distinction: Candidates scoring 70% or above aggregate (280/400 or more) receive a Certificate of Merit from ICAI, in addition to the pass certificate.
▸ RENEWAL & RECERTIFICATION
Certificate validity: The CA Foundation pass certificate does not expire and does not require renewal. It is a permanent pass record.
To renew before expiry, do one of the following:
A

The CA Foundation is only the first step — the subsequent levels (Intermediate and Final) have their own registration validity periods and must be completed within those windows.

B

Once a member of ICAI (post-qualification as CA), the member must fulfil Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements to maintain membership. CPE hours are required annually and verified by ICAI. Failure to complete CPE may result in certificate of practice suspension.

Non-practising CAs (those employed rather than in public practice) have different CPE requirements — refer to ICAI CPE guidelines on icai.org.
▸ Designation / Title Permitted
1Passing the CA Foundation does not confer any professional designation or post-nominal title. The designation 'CA' (Chartered Accountant) is awarded only upon clearing all three levels of the CA programme (Foundation, Intermediate, and Final) AND completing a mandatory 2-year Practical Training (Articleship) period AND passing the Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOMs) introduced under the new ICAI scheme.
2Post-qualification, the candidate becomes a member of ICAI and may use the designation 'CA' (Chartered Accountant) and the post-nominal letters 'ACA' (Associate Chartered Accountant). Upon accumulating sufficient membership experience, they may apply for 'FCA' (Fellow Chartered Accountant) status.
▸ Completion & Certification
1
Minimum Duration

4 months (mandatory study period from the date of registration before the first attempt). The earliest a candidate can clear Foundation: 4 months after registration.

2
Maximum Duration (Registration Validity)

4 years from the date of first eligibility to appear. Revalidation of Foundation registration is NOT permitted.

3
Typical Duration

Most students take 1–3 attempts over 6 months to 1.5 years to clear CA Foundation, depending on preparation and coaching.

▸ INDIA vs. GLOBAL DEMAND
India has over 4 lakh (400,000) ICAI members as of 2025, making it the second-largest accounting body in the world by membership (after AICPA).
The demand for CAs in India continues to grow with expanding regulatory requirements (GST, IND AS / IFRS convergence, Companies Act 2013 compliance, SEBI regulations) and India's rapid economic growth.
Globally, the CA (India) qualification is recognized through ICAI's Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with CPA Australia, CPA Canada, ICAEW (UK), ICAZ (Zimbabwe), and several other bodies — allowing Indian CAs to convert to those qualifications with additional tests, upon meeting experience requirements.
▸ AFFILIATED / ACCEPTING ORGANISATIONS
ICAI MRA Partners: CPA Australia, CPA Canada, ICAEW (UK), Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Ireland (CPA Ireland), ICAZ (Zimbabwe), CA Sri Lanka — Indian CAs may convert to these qualifications, subject to experience and additional assessments at the post-qualification level.
University Credits: Several Indian universities offer credit exemptions / direct admission to postgraduate commerce programmes (M.Com) for CA-qualified students. Check with individual institutions.
SEBI, RBI, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Income Tax Department: CA is the mandated qualification for numerous roles in Indian regulatory and government bodies.
▸ HOW IT STACKS UP

CA Foundation vs. close alternatives.

A factual side-by-side against the certifications people most often compare it to.

Difficulty Level & Pass Rate
Difficulty Level
Moderate to Hard — particularly because of the combination of subjective papers (requiring written explanation and numerical problem solving) and objective papers (with negative marking). The 50% aggregate + 40% per paper twin condition means balanced preparation across all subjects is essential.
Official Pass Rate
15.09% — officially declared by ICAI
Pass Rate Outlook
Approximately 14–25% per session, historically. The CA Foundation is considered one of the more challenging entry-level professional examinations in India.
Commonly Reported Difficult Units
Paper 1 (Accounting) requires strong numerical ability and clarity of accounting concepts. Paper 3 (Quantitative Aptitude) covers a very broad range of mathematics and statistics topics. The negative marking in Papers 3 and 4 requires accuracy, not just speed.

Specialised in corporate law and governance; complementary to CA rather than a direct substitute
ACCA
3–4 years typically
₹1,200 – 3,000 (exam fees); higher with tuition
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK) · Global recognition; strong in UK, Middle East, Southeast Asia; limited in India for statutory roles
Global qualification with broader geography; does not replace CA for Indian statutory audit
Can be pursued alongside other studies or work.

Yes — the CA Foundation can be pursued alongside Class 12 studies after provisional registration in Class 10. Many students prepare for CA Foundation while completing their Class 12 Commerce stream.

After Class 12: Students can simultaneously pursue B.Com or BBA alongside CA Foundation and Intermediate, as many universities allow CA students to register and attend college alongside their articleship and CA preparation.

ICAI specifically designs the Foundation study materials to be self-study compatible — no classroom attendance is mandatory, though coaching institutes are widely used.

Working professionals: The Direct Entry route (bypassing Foundation) is more suitable for working professionals who are already graduates. Foundation is primarily a post-Class 12 qualification pathway.
