The ultimate test of your accounting, audit, and tax expertise.
CA Final is the third and concluding level of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) programme conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It is the most advanced and comprehensive level, testing candidates on the full spectrum of professional accounting, auditing, taxation, and financial management skills required of a practicing Chartered Accountant. Under the new ICAI scheme (effective from May 2024 examinations onwards), the CA Final course consists of 6 papers divided into two groups of three papers each. The new scheme has replaced the older 8-paper structure and eliminated the elective paper in its previous form, replacing it with a mandatory integrated, open-book, case-study paper — Paper 6: Integrated Business Solutions (IBS) — a unique paper that tests cross-disciplinary application of all key CA subjects in real-world business scenarios. A crucial distinction of the new scheme: CA Final examinations are conducted only twice a year — in May and November. This is different from CA Foundation and CA Intermediate, which are conducted three times a year (January, May/June, and September). This means CA Final candidates have fewer windows to clear the examination, making preparation and attempt strategy particularly important. Before appearing in CA Final, candidates must: (1) pass both groups of CA Intermediate, (2) complete a 2-year Practical Training (Articleship), (3) complete the Advanced ICITSS (4-week training), and (4) qualify the applicable Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM). Clearing CA Final combined with these requirements qualifies the candidate to apply for ICAI membership and use the designation 'CA' (Chartered Accountant).
A candidate must satisfy ALL of the following conditions to register for the CA Final course: Registration alone is not sufficient. To be eligible to sit for the CA Final examination, a candidate must additionally satisfy:
A candidate who scores 60 marks or more (60%) in any individual paper in an attempt is eligible for a paper-wise exemption in that paper. CA Final has a paper-wise exemption system identical in principle to CA Intermediate: The exemption means the candidate does not need to re-appear in that paper in subsequent attempts within the exemption validity period — the 60+ marks are carried forward. Under the new ICAI scheme, ICAI treats exempted papers as permanently passed papers — the candidate needs to achieve 50% aggregate in the remaining papers of that group using the exempted marks plus marks from re-attempted papers. Candidates can voluntarily surrender their exemption if they wish to re-appear in the exempted paper to improve their score. Exemption validity: Valid for the current and immediately succeeding examinations (candidates should verify current exact validity from the latest ICAI circular, as this is subject to revision).
CA Final has no cross-course exemptions at the registration stage — all candidates must clear all 6 papers within the two groups.
CPA Canada (CPA — Chartered Professional Accountant): ICAI has a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with CPA Canada. Qualified Indian CAs may pursue CPA Canada through a simplified route, subject to meeting prescribed conditions including experience requirements.
CPA Australia: MRA with ICAI allows qualified Indian CAs to pursue CPA Australia membership with exemptions, subject to experience and assessment requirements.
ICAEW (UK — Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales): MRA with ICAI allows qualified Indian CAs to pursue ICAEW membership (ACA) with credit for their CA qualification, subject to conditions.
Offline — traditional pen and paper examination at designated ICAI examination centres
Not available — CA Final is not conducted online or in CBT mode
Offline — pen and paper BUT open-book: candidates may bring and refer to permitted study material/printed notes during the 4-hour examination
Important: ICAI officially announces exact CA Final exam dates approximately 3–4 months before each session. Students must always verify current dates and form submission deadlines on icai.org. There is no January or September attempt for CA Final — candidates who are not ready for May can only wait for November. CA Final is conducted TWICE a year only — in May and November. This is the most critical scheduling difference between CA Final and the other two levels.
Note: All registration fees are non-refundable. Always verify the current fee structure on icai.org before registering, as fees are subject to revision.

Annual Membership Fee: Members must pay annual membership subscription to ICAI to maintain active membership status
Certificate of Practice (COP) Renewal: Practising CAs who hold a COP must renew it annually with ICAI on payment of the prescribed fee
Continuing Professional Education (CPE): ICAI mandates CPE hours for all members — both members in practice (Certificate of Practice holders) and members in employment. Minimum CPE hours per year are prescribed by ICAI's CPE Committee. Non-compliance can lead to suspension of the Certificate of Practice. CPE hours are tracked on ICAI's CPE portal at cpe.icai.org.
Upon clearing CA Final AND obtaining ICAI membership (all conditions fulfilled), the qualified professional is entitled to use:
Candidates must complete 2 years of Articleship. The earliest a new scheme student can appear for CA Final is after 2 years of Articleship post-clearing both Inter groups, with Advanced ICITSS and applicable SPOM also completed.
The minimum theoretical duration from CA Foundation registration to CA Final clearance under the new scheme is approximately 3.5 to 4 years: 4 months (Foundation study) + 8 months (Intermediate study) + 2 years (Articleship) + CA Final preparation time.
10 years from CA Final registration, with one permitted revalidation
A factual side-by-side against the certifications people most often compare it to.
CA Final preparation is primarily done during the 2-year Articleship period — this is a full-time practical training commitment with restricted leave (12 days per year under the new scheme). Preparing for CA Final papers alongside a demanding articleship requires rigorous time management.
Most candidates take coaching for CA Final subjects (particularly Paper 1, 3, and 4) either before or alongside their articleship through evening/weekend classes or online coaching.
CA Final cannot be effectively pursued alongside a full-time job — the articleship itself is a near full-time commitment. Candidates should plan their study schedule around articleship office hours.
Paper 6 (IBS) preparation does not require traditional coaching — as an open-book case study paper, it rewards integrated understanding, which is built through articleship experience itself.
Key update categories to track via ICAI Announcements:
CA Final examination timetables for May and November sessions
Exam form dates and admit card availability
Income Tax Act and GST amendment circulars applicable for the upcoming exam session (Paper 4 and Paper 5 are heavily amendment-sensitive)
CA Final SPOM eligibility and deadline notifications
Many candidates take 2–4 attempts (1–2 years) to clear both groups of CA Final. The overall CA journey from Foundation to Final qualification typically takes 4–7 years for most candidates.
