▸ ABOUT THIS COURSE

CA Final

CA Final is the third and concluding level of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) programme conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It is the most advanced and comprehensive level, testing candidates on the full spectrum of professional accounting, auditing, taxation, and financial management skills required of a practicing Chartered Accountant. Under the new ICAI scheme (effective from May 2024 examinations onwards), the CA Final course consists of 6 papers divided into two groups of three papers each. The new scheme has replaced the older 8-paper structure and eliminated the elective paper in its previous form, replacing it with a mandatory integrated, open-book, case-study paper — Paper 6: Integrated Business Solutions (IBS) — a unique paper that tests cross-disciplinary application of all key CA subjects in real-world business scenarios. A crucial distinction of the new scheme: CA Final examinations are conducted only twice a year — in May and November. This is different from CA Foundation and CA Intermediate, which are conducted three times a year (January, May/June, and September). This means CA Final candidates have fewer windows to clear the examination, making preparation and attempt strategy particularly important. Before appearing in CA Final, candidates must: (1) pass both groups of CA Intermediate, (2) complete a 2-year Practical Training (Articleship), (3) complete the Advanced ICITSS (4-week training), and (4) qualify the applicable Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM). Clearing CA Final combined with these requirements qualifies the candidate to apply for ICAI membership and use the designation 'CA' (Chartered Accountant).

▸ ELIGIBILITY & PREREQUISITES

Strict eligibility — the concluding level of the CA programme.

A candidate must satisfy ALL of the following conditions to register for the CA Final course: Registration alone is not sufficient. To be eligible to sit for the CA Final examination, a candidate must additionally satisfy:

Both Groups
To Register for CA Final
Must have passed both groups of the CA Intermediate examination (under the new scheme or the old scheme as applicable). Passing only one group of CA Intermediate does not qualify the candidate for CA Final registration.
ICITSS
To Register for CA Final
Must have completed the ICITSS (Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) — a mandatory 4-week training conducted before commencement of Articleship
2 years
Articleship / Practical Training Requirement (New Scheme)
Candidates registered under the new scheme must complete 2 years of Practical Training (Articleship). To appear in the CA Final exam, the candidate must have completed the full 2 years of Articleship (including any excess leaves) on or before the last day of the month preceding the examination month — i.e., on or before 30th April for the May exam, and on or before 31st October for the November exam.
None
Age Limit
No minimum or maximum age limit is prescribed by ICAI for CA Final
▸ PREREQUISITES
  • 1Must have passed both groups of the CA Intermediate examination (under the new scheme or the old scheme as applicable). Passing only one group of CA Intermediate does not qualify the candidate for CA Final registration.
  • 2Must have completed the ICITSS (Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) — a mandatory 4-week training conducted before commencement of Articleship
  • 3Candidates must complete the Advanced ICITSS (Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) — a mandatory 4-week training course. This must be completed before appearing in the CA Final examination (or, at a minimum, before applying for ICAI membership, depending on applicable transitional provisions).
  • 4Candidates must qualify the applicable Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM) before appearing in the CA Final examination. See SPOM details below.
  • 5Candidates who are in the last 6 months of their 2-year Articleship as on the first day of the examination month are also permitted to appear in the CA Final examination.
▸ SPOM (SELF-PACED ONLINE MODULES) — DETAILS
  • 1SPOM Set A subject: Corporate and Economic Laws
  • 2SPOM Set A — Who Must Complete: All new scheme students admitted to CA Final from May 2024 onwards. Also required for candidates admitted up to November 2023 (before applying for ICAI membership).
  • 3SPOM Set B — Who Must Complete: All new scheme students. Also required for candidates admitted up to November 2023 (before applying for ICAI membership).
  • 4SPOM Set C subjects: 10 Elective Subjects including Risk Management, Sustainable Development, International Taxation, Data Analytics, etc. (choose from approved list)
  • 5SPOM Set C — Who Must Complete: Students admitted to CA Final from May 2024 onwards (unless exempted based on specific transitional criteria). Exempt for candidates who cleared both Inter groups up to November 2023 and met the prescribed articleship/ICITSS deadlines.
  • 6SPOM Set D subjects: 4 Multidisciplinary Courses — Constitution of India, Entrepreneurship, Psychology, Digital Ecosystem (choose one)
  • 7SPOM Set D — Who Must Complete: Students admitted to CA Final from May 2024 onwards (same exemption criteria as Set C apply).
  • 8SPOM Passing Criteria: Minimum 50% marks in each SPOM set. No negative marking. Unlimited attempts with no additional fee. Students are auto-enrolled upon CA Final registration. SPOM is offered on ICAI's Digital Learning Campus portal at no additional charge.
  • 9Important: The exact SPOM requirements and exemption criteria vary based on when the candidate was admitted to CA Final and their prior exam history. Students must verify their specific SPOM obligations through the official ICAI SSP portal or by contacting ICAI. The above is the general framework as applicable for new scheme students registered from May 2024 onwards.
▸ EXEMPTIONS & RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER EXAMS

A candidate who scores 60 marks or more (60%) in any individual paper in an attempt is eligible for a paper-wise exemption in that paper. CA Final has a paper-wise exemption system identical in principle to CA Intermediate: The exemption means the candidate does not need to re-appear in that paper in subsequent attempts within the exemption validity period — the 60+ marks are carried forward. Under the new ICAI scheme, ICAI treats exempted papers as permanently passed papers — the candidate needs to achieve 50% aggregate in the remaining papers of that group using the exempted marks plus marks from re-attempted papers. Candidates can voluntarily surrender their exemption if they wish to re-appear in the exempted paper to improve their score. Exemption validity: Valid for the current and immediately succeeding examinations (candidates should verify current exact validity from the latest ICAI circular, as this is subject to revision).

  • CA Final has no cross-course exemptions at the registration stage — all candidates must clear all 6 papers within the two groups.

  • CPA Canada (CPA — Chartered Professional Accountant): ICAI has a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with CPA Canada. Qualified Indian CAs may pursue CPA Canada through a simplified route, subject to meeting prescribed conditions including experience requirements.

  • CPA Australia: MRA with ICAI allows qualified Indian CAs to pursue CPA Australia membership with exemptions, subject to experience and assessment requirements.

  • ICAEW (UK — Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales): MRA with ICAI allows qualified Indian CAs to pursue ICAEW membership (ACA) with credit for their CA qualification, subject to conditions.

EXAM WINDOW

Important: ICAI officially announces exact CA Final exam dates approximately 3–4 months before each session. Students must always verify current dates and form submission deadlines on icai.org. There is no January or September attempt for CA Final — candidates who are not ready for May can only wait for November. CA Final is conducted TWICE a year only — in May and November. This is the most critical scheduling difference between CA Final and the other two levels.

▸ PASSING CRITERIA & CUT-OFFS
  • Minimum marks required per paper: 40 out of 100 (40%) in each individual paper within the group
  • Minimum aggregate marks required per group: 50% aggregate of total marks in that group — i.e., 150 out of 300 for each group
  • Both conditions — 40% in each paper AND 50% aggregate per group — must be satisfied simultaneously to pass a group
  • Set-off concession (both groups together): If you appear for both groups together and score at least 40% in every individual paper, ICAI's set-off rule may allow you to pass both groups even if one group's aggregate falls below 50%, provided the combined total of all 6 papers reaches 300/600 (50% overall). This rule existed under the old scheme; verify its exact applicability under the new scheme from the latest ICAI circular at icai.org before relying on it.
  • A candidate can clear one group at a time or both groups together
  • Paper-wise exemption: Scoring 60% or more (60 marks) in any paper earns a paper-wise exemption — those marks carry forward into subsequent attempts within the validity window
  • No negative marking — not even for MCQ sections in any of the 6 papers, including Paper 6 (IBS)
  • Distinction: A candidate who scores 70% or more aggregate (420/600) across all 6 papers in a single attempt (both groups cleared together) is awarded Distinction
  • Under the new scheme, SPOM is a mandatory component that must be completed before appearing in the CA Final examination (for students admitted from May 2024 onwards). Key facts:
  • SPOM consists of 4 sets: Set A (Corporate and Economic Laws), Set B (Strategic Cost and Performance Management), Set C (10 elective subjects — choose as applicable), Set D (4 multidisciplinary courses — choose one)
  • SPOM is delivered on ICAI's Digital Learning Campus portal: icailearninghome.icai.org
  • Passing criteria: Minimum 50% marks in each SPOM set
  • Unlimited attempts — candidates can reattempt SPOM tests without any additional fee
  • Set A and Set B topics complement and reinforce Paper 3 (Audit/Law) and Paper 6 (IBS) at the Final level
▸ NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS & RETAKE POLICY
  • CA Final registration is valid for 10 years from the date of registration. Revalidation of CA Final registration is permitted before expiry — refer to ICAI for the current revalidation fee.
  • There is no cap on the number of attempts within the registration validity period.
  • There is no mandatory cooling period between attempts — a candidate who does not clear in May can attempt November of the same year.
  • Group-wise flexibility: Candidates can attempt only Group I, only Group II, or both groups together in any session.
  • Paper-wise exemptions carry forward as per the exemption validity rules.

▸ INDIA vs. GLOBAL DEMAND
ICAI has over 4 lakh (400,000+) members as of 2025 — among the world's largest accounting bodies by membership, second only to AICPA. Demand for CAs continues to grow with India's expanding regulatory requirements (GST, Ind AS / IFRS, Companies Act compliance, SEBI regulations) and economic growth.
Global Mobility: Fully qualified Indian CAs are widely employed in the Middle East (UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia), UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and other countries with significant Indian finance professional communities.
ICAI MRAs (Mutual Recognition Agreements): Allow qualified Indian CAs to convert to CPA Canada, CPA Australia, ICAEW (UK), CPA Ireland, ICAZ (Zimbabwe), and CA Sri Lanka qualifications on simplified terms, enabling formal global recognition.
▸ AFFILIATED / ACCEPTING ORGANISATIONS
ICAI MRA Partners: CPA Australia, CPA Canada, ICAEW (UK), CPA Ireland, ICAZ (Zimbabwe), CA Sri Lanka — qualified Indian CAs may pursue these qualifications through simplified conversion routes
SEBI, RBI, MCA, Income Tax Department, CAG: CA is the mandated qualification for numerous statutory and regulatory roles in India
Universities: Some Indian universities offer direct admission to postgraduate programmes (M.Com, PhD in Commerce) for qualified CAs — check with individual institutions
▸ HOW IT STACKS UP

CA Final vs. close alternatives.

A factual side-by-side against the certifications people most often compare it to.

Difficulty Level & Pass Rate
Difficulty Level
Very Hard — CA Final is widely recognised as one of the most rigorous professional examinations in India. Paper 6 (IBS) is a unique open-book multidisciplinary case study paper unlike any other professional exam in India; Papers 1 (Financial Reporting under Ind AS) and 3 (Advanced Auditing) are depth-intensive; Paper 4 (Direct Tax and International Tax) requires mastery of complex provisions and frequent amendments.
Official Pass Rate
10.97% — officially declared by ICAI (1st March 2026). 7,590 candidates qualified. 18.75% (both groups) — officially declared.
Pass Rate Outlook
Both groups together: 10–20% per session. Individual groups: 10–25%.
Commonly Reported Difficult Units
Paper 6 (IBS) is an open-book, 4-hour examination — a format not found in other CA papers or most professional exams in India. Candidates can carry printed reference material. The challenge is synthesis and application, not recall.

Can be pursued alongside other studies or work.

CA Final preparation is primarily done during the 2-year Articleship period — this is a full-time practical training commitment with restricted leave (12 days per year under the new scheme). Preparing for CA Final papers alongside a demanding articleship requires rigorous time management.

Most candidates take coaching for CA Final subjects (particularly Paper 1, 3, and 4) either before or alongside their articleship through evening/weekend classes or online coaching.

CA Final cannot be effectively pursued alongside a full-time job — the articleship itself is a near full-time commitment. Candidates should plan their study schedule around articleship office hours.

Paper 6 (IBS) preparation does not require traditional coaching — as an open-book case study paper, it rewards integrated understanding, which is built through articleship experience itself.
